Values and Philosophy

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is collaborative: we work together in observation and exploration, goal setting, and development towards health and well-being. It is important to me that you have a space where your story can be shared safely, with nonjudgmental acceptance, from an attentive listener. It is empowering to have this warm and trustful space, marked with compassion, in order to motivate change. In this safe and empathic environment, I bring specialized knowledge in human behavior and development, psychological and social theories, and communication skills. You bring knowledge of your own history and traditions, ways of coping, and resources for growth. In this relationship, we will meet to invest in your development towards increased health and life functioning.

Therapeutic Technique and Methodology

My therapeutic work is characterized by ethical integrity, professional knowledge base, advanced training, experience, and self-awareness. My work has a scientific research and evidence base, as it is informed by biological, psychological, and social science research and best-practice. I believe in a person-in environment model, which assumes that there are many levels (i.e. biological, psychological, social, environmental, spiritual, etc.) that affect the human experience. Therefore, interpersonal and intrapersonal considerations are important for me to understand about my clients as I provide services.

I use theoretical frameworks to provide an understanding and interpretation of my clients’ stories and to guide the ongoing work in therapy. My training and experience is in psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, narrative, solution-focused, and dialectical-behavioral therapy. I have incorporated techniques and ways of thinking from motivational interviewing, mindfulness, Eastern philosophy and Western psychology into my work. It is significant to me that my therapy approach is determined by my clients’ presenting concerns and personalized needs.
