Primary Focus: Anxiety / Panic Disorders Counseling, Christian / Pastoral Counseling, Specialty Issues

Scope of Practice

I have twenty-seven plus years of experience providing mental health care in a variety of settings. Those include a Christian Therapy Program in Palmdale, CA, a pioneer program in faith-based inpatient mental health care. Also included is over seven years in private outpatient practice in California, and over 13 years in a Christian group practice in Phoenix, Arizona. I have counseled with countless clients, including adults, adolescents, couples, families and groups. I typically work with clients navigating the more common mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. I also enjoy working with individuals, couples and families to improve their relationships.

Since 1991, on an intermittent basis, I have supervised emerging counselors successfully completing a Master’s degree, and counselors working on and achieving independent licensure in both California and Arizona. In addition, I served for three years as a supervisor and consultant for a staff providing behavioral health services for the seriously mentally ill in Phoenix, Arizona.

This is a season in my life when being a quality supervisor of emerging therapists is a natural and energizing direction that flows out of my thirty plus years in the Mental Health field. It is a time I want to give back to the profession and train and mentor those entering the field. Learning never stops! I look forward to the ongoing continuation of the mutual learning process between myself and colleagues, clients, and supervisees.

In addition to all these experiences, I have taught in the areas of counseling, psychology, and sociology for over thirteen years at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I treasure my relationships with a diverse group of people built over that time, especially my fourteen years at American Indian College, a faith-based institution in Phoenix, Arizona. Enjoying cross-cultural relationships is one of my passions in life!

Limitations of my experience and knowledge exist in the areas of substance abuse, addictions, and domestic violence. I typically do not provide treatment or supervision in those areas.

Values and Philosophy

I see my counseling as walking along side a person or persons experiencing a season of challenges in life, and supporting them through that season until they feel equipped once again to go forward. I believe that with good information, and in an environment of safety and acceptance, a person can find the wisdom to face their past with appreciation, acceptance, forgiveness and understanding; their present with strength, direction and persistence; and their future with hope and purpose.

I believe that as human beings we were designed for relationship. With that in mind, I strive to value the therapeutic relationship as well as the relationships that the client enters counseling with. Together we can work to help relationships be as healthy as possible, thus improving quality of life. Often, one of our primary relationship struggles and strengths concerns our spiritual journey. As invited by the client, I offer the opportunity to explore spiritual issues in the counseling process as well.

Therapeutic Technique and Methodology

In the counseling setting, each client and I together will typically design a collaboratively formed, custom-made plan for our work together. I believe that providing a safe environment, where a person is deeply listened to, goes a long way in identifying both problem areas and solutions for growth and development. However, good listening is often not enough to help someone get “unstuck” and begin to move forward in a healthier direction. Therefore, I also see myself as a collaborator in providing information and resources to help people move from where they are to where they want to be.

To put labels on what I do, I typically build on a person-centered approach, utilize a cognitive behavioral approach (particularly supported as an evidence-based approach), while acknowledging the developmental process of each unique individual. A psychoeducational approach is inserted as appropriate for the goals of the individual, couple, or family. I often utilize solution-focused questioning to help us formulate goals for treatment. I strive to caringly and effectively equip and encourage others to live happy, successful, and fulfilling lives.
