Values and Philosophy
Dr. Wells-Moran approaches therapy (or counseling) from humanistic, mindfulness, strengths-oriented and holistic perspectives.
Humanistic psychology: Jolyn believes each individual has an inherent capacity for internal contentment and urge for personal development. We can change, find increased meaning in life, learn to overcome issues, develop new skills, gain knowledge or increase our flexibility and sense of peace to become the people we want to be.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness is basically awareness of what you're feeling, thinking and doing. We needn't be victims of our thoughts, emotions, behaviors -- or even events outside of ourselves. Instead, we can develop greater mindfulness and change the unnecessary impacts of adverse circumstances, thoughts or automatic reactions that keep us from being content, productive, joyful or calm.
Strengths-orientation: Enduring strengths are the assets we each own from early ages. Fortunately, we're also all born with an innate facility for healthy equanimity and the inner resources to make wise and healthy choices. When we become aware of these strengths, we can foster their growth to be our best and enjoy our lives to the fullest.
Holism: Dr. Wells-Moran also encourages and supports healthy changes in sleep, exercise, diet, other physical health, social life and life philosphy or spirituality -- all basics of well-being. She often teaches stress reduction along with counseling or psychotherapy. Jolyn doesn't prescribe medications, but understands that some people with certain conditions need medication to support psychological stability, some for a short time and others for the long-term. Current research shows that psychotherapy (counseling), while taking medication, is more beneficial for several conditions than medication alone.
People who see Jolyn gain a stronger sense of meaning, recognition of their real needs and how to meet those needs through using newly developed skills based on strengths. They also learn skills to stop standing in their own way and develop greater joy, better relationships, satisfaction, self-respect, improved physical health and tranquility. Counseling or therapy with me is not passive. Jolyn knows you can meet your goals if you participate in the process.
Therapeutic Technique and Methodology
Individuals
Jolyn Wells-Moram, PhD, MSW, LMHC uses what is known as an integrative approach; involving methods and techniques that are evidence-based and match the individual's needs and preferences. She often employs cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including ERP (exposure response prevention) for OCD; psycho-education; rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT); dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) methods; problem-solving; visualization; relaxation exercises; and more.
Couples
Solving issues as a couple depends on how well you know, respect and love each other. Jolyn can hep you find out how to make your partner feel loved, appreciated and accepted -- how to routinely provide these -- and how to receive these from your partner. Give up the competition for affection and respect in your relationship, if that's been an issue. Depending on your relationship, sessions may include;
Asking for what you each need,
Negotiating win/win solutions,
Letting go of old grievances,
Improving intimacy, and
Communicating effectively.
Individual couples special session
You may want to begin by taking the "Staying in Love Workshop," developed by Dr. Wells-Moran, for individual couples. This workshop is also great for people who want to start their lives as a couple on a positive path, decide if they can become a well-functioning couple, address issues before starting a family or just maintain their loving relationship. $80. per session, no matter where you are on the sliding fee scale. Read more here.
Stress Management for Managers
Improve your relations with employees, your family and others,
Increase your capacity for concentration when you need it,
Help you leave the job at work when you're elsewhere,
Gain a healthy sense of humor,
Develop greater personal flexibility,
Expand your creativity, and
Feel, look and be physically and psychologically healthier.
Through a process of discovering a few simple meditation, relaxation and visualization exercises that will work for you, and perhaps changing a few old thinking and health habits, you can be the manager you want to be while also being the person you want to be. $80. per session, no matter where you are on the sliding fee scale.
